Fours

Fours is an easy dominoes game for young children. Children sit around a table. An adult or older child may need to explain the rules, shuffle and deal the dominoes and oversee the game.

Age: Young Children

No. of players: 3 to 6

Equipment: One standard set of double-six dominoes

Time: 10 minutes+

Aim: To be the first player to get rid of all their tiles.

1. Players choose one domino each. The player with the highest number of spots in total on their tile goes first. Replace the dominoes and shuffle them before players draw their tiles.

    3 players - Nine tiles each
    4 players - Seven tiles each
    5 players - Five tiles each
    6 players - Four tiles each
If there are any unused tiles, they are put to the side of the table.

2. Each player looks at their tiles without letting anyone else see them. (Younger children might need to hide them behind a book or similar.) The first player puts down any tile in the middle of the table to start the layout. They continue to put down any more of their tiles which match the number of spots on either end of the layout. If they are really lucky, they can put down all of their tiles in one go! (Normally, it takes two or more rounds before anyone wins.)

3. If the first player did not get rid of all their dominoes, the player to their left then attempts to put one of their tiles to match the number of spots on either end of the layout. Again, they can continue to place any more matching tiles at either end of the layout.

4. Play continues with each player putting as many tiles down as they can during their turn. If any player cannot match one of their tiles, they miss their turn.

5. The first player to get rid of all their tiles is the winner.
