Pombo

Pombo is a popular African game from Ghana which is very similar to jacks or knuckles, played using stones.

Age: All ages

No. of players: 1 or more

Equipment: 7 stones

Time: 5-10 minutes per round

Aim: To pick up all 7 stones.

1. Seven stones are placed on the ground in front of the player. The child chooses one stone and tosses it in the air. While the stone is in the air he picks up one stone from the pile on the ground (using the same hand) and then catches the stone that was thrown in the air.

2. The player places the stone back into the pile in front of him. The player then throws the stone into the air again. This time the player must pick up two stones (using the one hand) and then catch the stone that was thrown.

3. The next time the player must pick up 3 stones, then 4 stones, then 5 stones and finally, 6 stones.

4. If he is unable to pick up the stones then another player has his turn.
