Monopoly Review

This Monopoly review looks at one of the classic board games
that has been popular since it was first released in 1935.
Continue reading to find out why it has endured for so long.

Photo of Monopoly gameWhy would anyone do a Monopoly™ review when it is one of the best known and most loved board games in the world? It's simple. Like most of the classic books that everyone knows but no one has actually read (when was the last time you read Moby Dick or Wuthering Heights?), Monopoly has had a long run at the top of the popularity stakes but it may be a while since you actually played it.

Although the game has been around since 1935, the original version (the one with all the London street names such as Mayfair and Pall Mall) is still available. Parker Brothers (the makers of Monopoly) have also released scores of variations to the game, from local versions that use street names of national cities (like Australian Monopoly) to Junior versions for younger players and specialised editions that hook into movies and TV shows (anyone for SpongeBob SquarePants Monopoly or Star Wars Monopoly?) There are also electronic versions for computers and mobile devices, as well as card game editions and versions with electronic banking.

Photo of children playing MonopolyWe recently bought a new copy of the original (and in our view the best) version because the old one wore out and we lost many of the money notes (sound familiar?) Our new edition includes a Speed Die and modified rules for faster play as well as all the old rules for a longer game. It is still suitable for 2 to 8 players, aged eight and older.

Most people play this game by modifying the rules slightly. They stick to the main rules and try to accumulate wealth by buying and selling properties and then putting houses and hotels on those properties to increase the amount of rent received when another player lands on that property. However, they often add their own "house rules" such as borrowing money from each other and doing deals to not charge rent in the future, etc. This means the game lasts much longer, though. Some players may become bankrupt and/or leave the game by choice but the remaining players usually play until a set time and then add up all their properties and cash to find out who wins by having the greatest total wealth.

Photo of Monopoly DealThis Monopoly review also looks at Monopoly Deal card game which we also purchased last year. It is very portable and can be played anywhere, as well as being much faster to play than regular Monopoly (one game can be easily finished in less than thirty minutes). In this version, the aim is to collect three property sets to win. The deck has Property cards (28 single property cards, 9 wild cards for two properties and two multi-colour wild property cards), Money cards (to pay rent) and Action cards (can be used for the listed action or used as rent money). The rules are different but the basic game is familiar to anyone who has played the board game. It makes an interesting change and is a wonderful addition to your games cupboard, especially for travel and vacations.

It is one of those classic games that everyone should play for a very good reason: it is so much fun for the whole family to play. It has endured the passage of time and has become the "king of board games" around the world. If you've never played Monopoly before, do yourself a favour and buy a copy now. If it has been a while since you've played, renew your experience with this great game. You could even try one of the new versions for something a little bit different. Amazon has the original edition as well as many other versions.
