Hot Potato is a delightful birthday party game for toddlers and young children.
Age: Young children
No. of players: 6 or more
Equipment: A large soft beach ball or something similar; music
Time: Approximately 5 minutes
Aim: To get rid of the ball or perform a forfeit.
1. Players stand in a circle and choose one player to hold the 'hot potato' (beach ball).
2. Play some music and have the player begin to pass around the ball.
3. When the music stops, the child holding the beach ball gets to do an easy forfeit. Examples of forfeits could be: hopping on one leg, jumping on the spot, running around the circle, singing a simple nursery rhyme, counting to 5 or 10; clapping their hands 10 times, and so on.
4.Continue playing the game until everyone has a chance to perform a forfeit.
Variation 1: Children can gently throw the ball to any other player in the circle rather than passing it to the next player.
Variation 2: Older children can also play this game, but they may prefer to use a smaller ball such as a tennis ball.
Easter Variation: Hot Easter Egg - play the game with a large Easter egg instead of a ball.
